The Chicken Wars Part 1

Ride Report: "Wing Quest "

Pictures of this days event can be viewed at the Pictures Page

Chicken Run Prequel:

Our day started at about 8:30 with a get together at the Galaxie Restaurant (our usual Sunday morning haunt) for some breakfast and light hearted conversation. We had very important tasks at hand today, so needed our energy.

Our first event of the day was the very first bi-annual Adopt A Road program. The adopt a road program is in place in most communities, and involves a group, or company sponsoring a section of road. It then becomes their responsibility to go twice per year to clean up beside the road. For our efforts, we get a great sense of community involvement, and a nice sign on both sides of the street like the one you see to the right.

555, Captain, Eagle, Vermit, Intimidator, TwoToes, Honey Bee, Lobo, Mama Bear, Pitbull, Leather, Grapes, BT, Sporty and Gonzo all came out to lend a hand at cleaning up the community. A fantastic time was had by all (yes, its true! You CAN have fun cleaning up garbage! :) )

By 10:30 we had finished cleaning up the road, and we were all ready to head off for wings. 555, Intimidator, Grapes, BT, and Sporty had other plans for the day, so they went on their way as we were leaving for the now Infamous Chicken Wars Part I. Why infamous you say? Read on...

Stop 1 - the Town Pump in Keswick:

It was a warm and cloudy day ..........

Ok let's get to the good stuff -- we left from the Galaxie after saying our farewells to BT, Sporty, 555, Intimidator and Grapes. Gonzo led the ride up to Keswick via Warden Avenue with the following in tow --- Honey Bee, Leather, Vermit, Eagle (after all it is a chicken wing run), Captain, Two Toes, Lobo, Mama Bear and Pitbull. We arrived at the Town Pump at about 11:45 a.m. and were greeted by a very smiling and attractive hostess who was expecting us. She
promptly advised us that the establishment was giving us a discount on the cost of the wings.

98 wings were ordered with the following comments --- "not huge"; hot was
not very hot"; "not happy"; "taste good but not great"; "the honey garlic
had more honey than garlic". The wings here have been great before, but it appears not consistantly.

The general consensus were that the wings and the establishment were acceptable and passable but nothing spectacular. To everyone's delight the first order was curtesy of Captain -- maybe that's why when everyone was eating 6 to 10 wings - Gonzo ordered 25! ;-) Photographs were taken and should be visible shortly.

Stop Two - Turtle Jacks - Brampton:

We then parted company with Gonzo who had an appointment (?) in Wasaga (nothing more need be said) and headed off to Brampton. The ride was spectacular through twists and turns (particularly regional road 17). We stoped at Cango Service Station which deserves special mention as having the dirtiest washroom visited by most members of the ride.

We arrived at Turtle Jacks Grill House at about 2:45. Remember the question about a Bail Fund -- well after we sat down at the patio -- a police cruiser showed up followed by a second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth cruiser whose occupants spent a great deal of time viewing the bikes. I finally mentioned to the Inspector that I was travelling with some unsavory characters and he promptly replied "Are you all pensioners?"

Anyway, someone had called the local constabulary when we all pulled into the parking lot. There was a report that bikers with colours were at the restaurant -- we blamed it all on Captain and his Harley jacket. The police were finally satisfied and while I was tempted to beg them to take a couple of Zens with them they ultimately left empty handed.

We then continued with our task at hand. Robin, our waitress was a delight. A very attractive and personable individual. I will make no mention of the belly button! We all ordered Roasters -- the smaller wings were also available. Everything was sold by the pound. The wings were exceptional and came with veggies and dipping sauce. The french fries were also outstanding (Even with the 14 tablespoons of salt added in Trotters honour!). It was the consensus of the Group that these wings were some the best ever tasted. It was truly a Zen event. That being the case we decided to adjourn the continuation of the ride for a future date and everyone departed just after 4:00 p.m with the full intent to continue on our quest for a review of the best wings within a days ride. So stayed tuned, to find out about the Bail Fund and for...
